Chamomile is a medicinal herb with various health benefits. Chamomile plant flowers are used to prepare herbal tea which is used to treat insomnia. Chamomiles tea is a sedative, it affects the nervous system by relaxing muscles in insomnia patients to asleep more easily. It is one of the safest herbs to use. Its nervine and sedative properties are safe for treating nervous system disorders like stress and anxiety in children who have been in a highly emotional state over a long period of time.
Chamomile flowers are used as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer agent for centuries. The anti-inflammatory properties are used to treat, arthritis, and other painful swellings. Chamomile can help in improving the immune system and provide some protection against cancer. Chamomile can be useful in treating the aches and pains due to colds, flu, and allergies and fevers. Its antioxidants properties provide healthy skin and also treats wounds and cuts. It is also used to treat upset stomach and vomiting.
About the plant:
Chamomile is an annual herb native to Europe but now it can be found in every country. Its branched stems are erect, round and hollow and grow up to 2 feet tall. The flowers are daisy-like about 1 inch across and bloom from May to October. The entire plant has a pineapple scent.
How to grow:
The chamomile grows quickly from seed. Plant Chamomile seeds directly in the ground in fall. The seeds need light to germinate, so just press the seed into the soil rather than covering. It requires warm conditions for germination and it should occur within a week.
How to use:
Chamomile herbal tea can be prepared from dried flowers by steeping in hot water. Tea bags of chamomile are available in the market which contains either pure chamomile flower powder or may be blended with other medicinal herbs. It can be used in the form of Chamomile oil extracted from the chamomile flower.
Very large doses of chamomile may cause nausea and vomiting. Avoid use during pregnancy.
