What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is a set of five therapeutic treatments administered to the patient for the complete detoxification of the body. According to Ayurveda, the detoxification of the body is essential before undergoing any other major treatment. Even for healthy people, it is recommended to undergo this treatment once every five years to rid the body of all the impurities and chemical toxins it accumulates over the years. In some cases, Panchakarma alone can cure many chronic diseases that will not require any further treatments afterwards.

What are the benefits?

Panchakarma removes toxins from the digestive system, bowels, lungs, blood vessels and nervous system. It strengthens the muscles and joints and helps in the hormone secretion of all glands. It improves the appetite, sleep quality, sexuality, concentration and memory. No wonder many people feel like they have a new body after Panchakarma!

Who should follow this program?

Those whole live with constant stress and strain from their work and daily lifestyle, addicts of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, those who have been taking prescription herbals over a long period of time, those who suffer from ailments such as arthritis, rheumatism, chronic digestive problems, constipation, migraines, obesity, insomnia, or just about anybody who feels the need to purify their body.

How many Days should you stay?

Minimum 21 to 28 days for a normal, healthy person. The first day will be dedicated to consultations with the ajarya and rest. The treatment begins on the second day and there will be one or two rest days between phases of the treatment, depending on how well your body is responding.

What is the daily program?

  • Daily consultation with our Ayurvedic Ajarya to monitor your health and progress

  • Therapy sessions

  • Oral Herbal medication

  • Ayurvedic diet (which will be decided by the ajarya after consultation)

  • Yoga and breathing sessions (1 or 2 sessions per day – optional)

  • Meditation (optional)

  • Any other activity you choose that does not contradict with the treatment such as taking a brisk walk in the forest surrounding our campus or taking a swim in the river.

The 5 Phases of Panchakarma

1.Purvakarma-the pre-purification preparation

Before the actual detoxification begins, there is a need to prepare the body in prescribed methods to encourage it to release toxins. Two procedures are used for this : Snehana and Swedana.

Snehana is a full-body massage with medicated herbal oils. The oil is massaged into the body in a particular manner in order to move the toxins towards the gastro-intestinal tract. The oil also penetrates the skin leaving the superficial and deep tissues soft and supple, thus helping to remove stress and nourish the nervous system. Snehana is given for 3 to 7 days as indicated

Swedana is sudation or sweating. It is given every day immediately following Snehana. An herbal concoction may be added to the steam to further loosen the toxins from the body. Swedana liquefies the toxins and facilitates their movement towards the gastro-intestinal tract

Pradhanakarma-The main Purification process

2. Vamana- Vomiting Therapy

When there is congestion in the lungs causing repeated bronchitis attacks, colds, cough or asthma, the Ayurvedic treatment is therapeutic vomiting. This therapy eliminates the Kapha causing the excess mucus.

3. Virechana -Purgation Therapy

When excess bile (Pitta) is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and small intestine, it tends to result in rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic fever, vomiting, nausea and jaundice. Ayurveda suggests in these conditions, the administration of therapeutic purgation or a therapeutic laxative.

4. Nasya- Nasal Administration

The nose is the doorway to the brain and also the entryway to one’s inner self. The nasal administration of medicated drops is recommended for an excess of bodily humors accumulated in the sinuses, throat, nose or head areas. They are eliminated through the nearest possible opening – the nose.

5. Basti-Enema Therapy

The predominant location for Vata is the colon. Basti therapy involves the introduction of herbal decoctions and medicated oil preparations into the rectum. It relieves constipation, digestive problems, chronic fever, colds, sexual disorders, kidney stones, heart pains, backache, sciatica and various joint pains. Many other Vata disorders such as arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms and headaches can also be treated with Basti.

The above-mentioned treatment plan is the general Panchakarma therapy for a normal healthy person. However, our ajaryas will check your past medical history and diagnose your present health condition before deciding on the correct treatment for your individual needs.

Ayurveda has two main objectives – one is to maintain health and the second is to cure disease.

Rasayana or rejuvenation is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy to restore the body’s vitality to its fullest capacity. It is defined as any herb, food, or activity which bestows youthfulness and cures disease. If taken in a proper way, Rasayana helps maintain youthfulness and keeps you fit both physically and mentally for many years. In ancient India, people who used this therapy lived to be over a hundred years old.

What are the benefits of Rasayana?

Rasayana therapy makes you feel young and energetic, improves skin condition and glow, improves sleep quality, memory and concentration, clears the voice, improves the capacities of the sense organs – eyes, nose, tongue, ears and sexual organs, the body’s immunity is increased to resist any common diseases and last but not least, improves the body’s strength and brings calmness to the mind.

For who?

People suffering from the following problems or illnesses : stress, insomnia, shallow breath, rough and dry skin, weak senses and sexuality, weak appetite, lack of concentration, weak memory, chronic digestive problems, constipation, migraine and obesity. But no need to be ill to treat yourself to Rasayana Rejuvenation Therapy. If all you are looking for is to increase your vitality and have a fresh and energetic body, then this is the therapy for you.

Modern life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. For many people, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life. Stress can affect how you feel, think, behave and how your body works. In fact, stress can create a variety of symptoms including anxiety, fatigue, eating disorders, depression, headaches, difficulty concentrating and increased anger and relationship troubles. Stress is not an illness in itself, but it can cause serious illness if it is not addressed. If we cannot sleep well and maintain good digestion and elimination, how can we enjoy the jobs, money, luxuries, relationships and power we are striving to achieve?

How does it work?

According to Ayurveda, our inability to deal with stress is due to an imbalance, or lack of coordination of the 3 main mental functions: Dhi (learning), Dhriti (retention) and Smriti (long-term memory), and a lack of Ojas energy in the body. At Ayurveda Yoga Villa, the Stress Management Program is aimed at relieving the stress accumulated over the years, and increasing the body’s level of Ojas by achieving proper hormonal balance and reinforcing mental potency to better cope with stress in the future.

For who?

People dealing with the following issues: insomnia, lack of concentration, anxiety, bad temper, obsessive eating and drinking or lack of appetite, low energy level, poor digestion, constipation, sexual disorders, chain smoking or heavy drinking. This program is also recommended for anyone who wants to experience peace of mind.

How many days?

Minimum 1 week, ideally 2 weeks, and for better results, 3 to 4 weeks, depending on your present condition and your expectations.

What is the therapy like?

• Daily consultation with our Ayurvedic ajarya

• Ayurveda Therapy sessions

• Yoga and Pranayama (breathing) sessions

• Meditation and mantra chanting – our experts will decide how much time and what type

• Oral Herbal medication

• Ayurvedic diet – which will be decided after consultation

• Any other activities that do not contradict with the treatment such as contemplative walks in the forest around us or a swim in the river

Ayurvedic Treatments:

• Abyanga: A 60 minute full-body massage with medicated herbal oils to release tension from muscles and joints.

• Pizchil: A 15 minute head massage and deep tissue oil pouring massage to strengthen hormonal secretions.

• Sirodhara: A head massage followed by the continuous pouring of warm herbal oil/milk/buttermilk on the forehead for 45 minutes to cool the nervous system.

• Sirovasthi: Warm herbal oils are put on the head and kept for 45 minutes to cool the cerebral and nervous systems.

• Talam: Special powder mixed with medicated herbal oil is applied on the head.

• Thalapothichil: Special herbal pastes are applied to the entire body.

• A steam bath is given after most of these treatments.

• Ayurvedic diet is given to counteract the stress releasing chemicals.

The above mentioned treatment plan is the general Stress Management Therapy for a normal healthy person. However, our ajarya will have to check your past medical history and diagnose your present health condition before finalizing the treatment plan that is right for you.

Obesity is one of the most common health problems in today’s world and also the source of many other high risk problems such as angina, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart failure, gout, etc. Extensive research has already been performed on obesity in modern medicine and many pills have been invented, but their results are generally temporary. Even physical workouts and dieting can do very little to help if one does not understanding the underlying reason for the excessive weight (or low weight).

The real reasons

According to Ayurveda, being overweight or underweight is due to an imbalance in the 3 Doshas (the bodily humors that make up one’s constitution): Vata, Pitt and Kapha. An imbalance can occur regardless of how much or how little food you eat. Improper digestion or improper metabolism due to excessive Kapha and Ama (waste) is at the root of the problem. When Kapha is imbalanced, the heavy characteristics of the Earth and Water elements become exaggerated. However, obesity can also be found in Vata and Pitta dominant people. These types can suffer from poor digestion if their digestive fire is too low. As a result, food is not processed properly, which can result in weight gain or obesity. But in general, Vata types are underweight rather than overweight because their bodies have trouble absorbing nutrients. Weight gain results when they attempt to eat more sweet and oily foods to calm their Vata imbalance.

How does it work?

The Ayurvedic approach to achieving your ideal weight is based on taking a realistic look at your body type and restoring the entire digestive and metabolic processes. A low calorie diet and regular yoga is also essential throughout this process.

What can be done?

At Ayurveda Yoga Villa we have a multidimensional approach to weight management. First our ajarya will diagnose your Prakriti (body type) and your Dosha imbalances. Then, they will prescribe the proper herbs, therapies and massages to reduce fat cells in the body and promote proper metabolism. Two yoga sessions per day, along with Pranayama (breathing exercises) and brisk walks in the surrounding countryside, can burn extra calories and rid your body of muscular tension and the feeling of heaviness. Meditation and mantras can also help to calm your mind.

How many days?

Minimum 2 weeks, and for better results 3 to 4 weeks, depending on your present condition and your expectations.

Ayurvedic Treatments:

• Abyangam: A massage with a specific combination of oils and herbs to release muscle and joint stiffness and improve blood circulation and elimination.

• Kizhi: Boluses filled with herbal leaves or powders are applied to the whole or part of the body in a specific manner, after being dipped in warm medicated herbal oil.

• Elakizhi: A massage with special herbal powder to detoxify and nourish all the cells of the body.

• Swedana: Opening the pores of the skin through steam and warm herbal oils.

• Udvarthanam: A massage with special herbal powder to burn excess fat.

• Oral Herbal Medication: To convert excessive fat into energy and for improved metabolism.

• Ayurvedic Diet: Low calorie food with lots of fruits and juices.

The above mentioned treatment plan is the general Stress Management Therapy for a normal healthy person. However, our ajarya will have to check your past medical history and diagnose your present health condition before finalizing the treatment plan that is right for you.

According to Ayurveda, one’s health and emotional state are reflected in the face and in the body and cannot be disguised with cosmetics. In other words, Ayurveda emphasizes on maintaining the skin’s beauty by keeping our internal body clean and healthy.

The Ayurvedic secret to beauty is ojas energy, which is the essence of the 7 dhatus (blood, nutrients, bones, marrow, muscles, fat, sperm/ovum), that gives vitality to our neuromuscular system and radiates youthful energy and glowing skin at all ages. For enhancing beauty, we use special herbs made of green leaves, turmeric, almonds, lavender, roses, fresh vegetables and fruits, etc.

How does this program help?

At Ayurveda Yoga Villa, beauty management and skin care is aimed at freeing the body of ama (toxins), restoring cellular nutrition and balancing the doshas for improved blood circulation and waste elimination. This includes procedures like cleansing, massages, herbal steam, gentle scrubs, facial packs, toning, rejuvenating and moisturizing. This program can also help in healing scars by stimulating the deepest layers of the skin.

How many days?

Minimum 1 week, ideally 2 weeks, and for better results, 3 to 4 weeks, depending on your present condition and your expectations.

What is the therapy like?

Besides the oral herbal medication to purify the blood and promote elimination, we give massages with special herbs and warm herbal oils to improve toning of tissues and for increased blood and oxygen supply to every cell of the body. The Ayurvedic diet with plenty of fruits and fruit juices also helps to clean the internal system. All the Ayurvedic herbs used in this program will be based on your personal body constitution and the fruits and vegetables you will consume will be according to your skin type.

Yoga & Pranayama sessions twice daily to detoxify the body, improve blood circulation and make you feel very light and flexible. Nature walks and meditation will also calm your nerves and increase your peace of mind – which will in turn reflect like an aura of beauty from within.

Ayurvedic Treatments:

• Abyangam: A massage with a specific combination of oils and herbs to release muscle and joint stiffness and improve blood circulation and elimination.

• Thalapothichil: Following a head and face massage, herbal paste is applied to the scalp.

• Swedana: Opening the pores of the skin through steam and warm herbal oils.

• Ksheera Abyangam: A massage with milk cream mixed with herbs.

The above mentioned treatment plan is the general Stress Management Therapy for a normal healthy person. However, our ajarya will have to check your past medical history and diagnose your present health condition before finalizing the treatment plan that is right for you.

Yoga is not only a physical exercise as is taught in the West. They end up going back home more tired than before their vacation.

At Ayurveda Yoga Villa, our approach to all your health problems is holistic and multidimensional.

Though we cannot guarantee to cure all your problems, our treatments could be complementary to your allopathic medication. The experience of our past clients tells us that those who have tried our treatments never went home without any benefits at all – for some it was a complete and miraculous cure, and for others, our treatments helped them more than they had expected. However, by the end of treatment, everyone was able to better understand their bodies and the roots of their problems and comprehend how alternative healing methods can help them, rather than blindly swallowing the pills prescribed by their doctors. All our oral medication is purely herbal – without any side effects. We use both Ayurvedic and Yogic therapies to work on various levels – physical, vital (pranic), mental and spiritual.

In addition, the evergreen forest around us and the fast flowing waters of River Kabani have their own healing effect — without any effort on your part.

Our Treatment Methodology

1. Discovering your body’s constitution (prakriti) and dosha imbalances.
2. Eliminating the accumulated toxins, which is the main cause for most of the problems

4. Deep relaxation of the body and mind for maximum effect of oral medication.

Ayurveda is a 5000 year old system of holistic healing that takes into account the mind, the body, the senses and the soul. It is the work of harmonizing the body through the in-depth knowledge and understanding of nature and the inner self, that generates healing on all levels. Ayurveda originates in India and was developed by ancient Ayurvedic Acharyas who referred to it as “The Science of Life”.

According to Ayurveda, monsoon season is the best season for rejuvenation therapies that strengthen the body, for the atmosphere is dust-free, humid and cool. Moreover, the body is most receptive to herbal oils and therapies during the monsoon, as this is when its pores are open to their maximum extent. These favorable conditions accelerate healing and restore the body’s vitality, health and balance.

Ayurveda has selectively recognized monsoon season as the best time for receiving PanchakarmaRejuvenation therapies. Panchakarma is a curative treatment that deeply cleanses and detoxifies the body without damaging the tissues. It reinforces the immune system and leaves the body healthier, stronger and free from chronic ailments.

The Panchakarma Rejuvenation treatment program is a unique opportunity to cleanse and rejuvenate both physically and mentally in a pure, spiritual and yogic environment.
